Dr Ian Chapman: My Adventures in Chronicling the Dunedin Sound
June’s edition of the Otago Settlers Association’s Tuesday Club welcomes Dr Ian Chapman, senior lecturer in Contemporary Music at The University of Otago, speaking about his book The Dunedin Sound: Some Disenchanted Evening.
The Dunedin Sound is a term used to describe the music of a broad group of Dunedin musicians and bands in the early-mid 1980s. Closely linked to independent record company, Flying Nun, The Dunedin Sound is a firmly established descriptor known the world over while remaining somewhat contentious in Aotearoa. A revolutionary independent (indie) music phenomenon built upon a fiercely DIY ethos, in this talk Dr Ian Chapman relates his enjoyable yet challenging journey in compiling the first-ever stand-alone book about the music that put Dunedin on the world map.
This event begins with refreshments and an opportunity to chat with Otago Settlers Association members.
