The Snow Queen, by renowned Russian writer Evgeny Schwartz (1996-1958), is addressed to both adults and children. This play is about a child (Gerda) who risks her life to save her stepbrother (Kai). The boy is taken away by the evil forces (the Snow Queen) accompanied by her frozen-heart servant (the Commercial advisor), cowards (King), and heartless people (Robbers). While Schwartz’s play follows the plot of the original Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale, Schwartz adapted it to reflect the
real ongoing battle between good and evil that he was seeing all around him.

Evgenii Schwartz wrote The Snow Queen in 1938 during the Great Purge in the Soviet Union. Throughout this period children were orphaned, taken away from their relatives, and forced to betray their loved ones in the name of bright and glorious future. Few adults and children remained faithful to their conscience and helped their relatives and friends. Courage was needed just to say hello to a relative of the so called ‘enemy of people’ because friends of the ‘enemies of people’ risked being imprisoned together with their families. Yet some people risked their lives to save children of perished relatives and friends. Schwartz’s The Snow Queen is a story about Love, Hope, and Victory of virtue over evil.
