In this workshop, you will learn to use underglaze to decorate your piece (either one you have made in a previous workshop with me or a piece from my studio*). We will then finish with a clear coat of glaze and your piece will be fired and ready to collect the following week.
Techniques covered are underglazing, sgraffito and brush-on.
*extra charge if you want to glaze a piece from the studio.
What to bring:
An apron or clothes you don’t mind getting covered in glaze.
Any inspiration you may have.
A piece you have made in a previous workshop (optional).

Are you itching to try something new? To express your unique vision? To create something that’s not only beautiful, but practical, too? Join my workshops and learn how to make gorgeous, functional ceramics that you can use every day. For beginners and beyond, these art classes are designed to provide a warm and welcoming place for you to unleash your imagination.
Shannon Courtenay is a Cardrona-based artist who works mainly in ceramics, using mould making, slip casting, and handbuilding methods to create pieces that verge on being indistinguishable from the originals. A principal theme in Shannon’s collections is river ecology, with a strong focus on the Cardrona River. Some of her new work involves digital and video art, exploring the intersection of classical ceramics techniques and technology.
Built in 2019, Shannon Courtenay Ceramics Studio is located on Kind Farm Animal Sanctuary in the idyllic Cardrona Valley. The Cardrona River flows through the sanctuary and the natural surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for endless inspiration.
“[Shannon] is a calm, easygoing teacher and I was immediately inspired by her unique ceramics and the peaceful studio space she has created. If you ever get the opportunity to undertake a ceramics workshop with Shannon, I highly recommend it! I hope Shannon’s space and work inspires you to pursue a creative venture that you have had brewing for a while.” -Josie McGuinness, Sunday Projects
