487 Mangorei Rd, New Plymouth

Established in 1932 by Russell Matthews and his family, and sculptured from a hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, Tupare is an Arts & Crafts garden and restored Chapman-Taylor designed house in the English style.

Leading all the way down to the Waiwhakaiho River, winding paths cut out of the hill-side lead to surprising vistas and intimate garden rooms. The river flat area retains an idyllic pastoral feeling with simple plantings of specimen trees complemented by the movement of the wind and water.

The garden has a rich variety of trees, shrubs and perennials that thrive in the benign Taranaki climate and sheltered environment. Grand coniferous trees such as dawn redwoods, kauri, rimu and giant redwoods set the framework for the garden. They are supported by beautiful deciduous specimens such as the copper beech, dove trees, tulip trees and liquidambars - the autumn show at Tupare is very special. Smaller trees, typically maples and magnolias, are favoured alongside rhododendrons, camellias, azaleas and hydrangeas. Complementing these are cottage garden plants and spring bulbs.

Alongside Pukeiti and Hollard Gardens, Tupare is owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council, the garden is open daily and free entry. Free house tours, kindly hosted by the Friends of Tupare, are run at 11am and 11.30am on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 1 October to 31 March. There is a regular programme of public events including music, garden fairs and horticultural workshops.

Open daily - 9 am to 8 pm daylight saving hours, 9 am to 5 pm winter hours
