The Chalet, situated on Centennial Drive in Hokowhitu, over looking the lagoon was built by the Palmerston North City Council in the mid 60's. The upstairs was intended as a function room, and the downstairs as the club rooms for the Palmerston North Canoe Club. At about the same time, the founder of the Canoe Club, David Dilks, passed away and left the club 5 residential properties around Palmerston North. It was decided in conjunction with the Palmerston North City Council, that these premises should be sold and the funds used for a major extension, upstairs & downstairs of the Chalet. This more than doubled the size of the existing premises and occurred in about 1968.
Since then the Chalet has become an iconic event centre for Palmerston North. Many people have at some stage either held or attended a function at the Chalet. Over the 40+ years of its existence, there have been four different caterers based in the Chalet, and in 2007 the lease was taken over by chef Lisa Fletcher.
