Nāu te raurau, nāku te raurau, ka ora ai te iwi.
With my basket and your basket the people will thrive.

Linda Lee (Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Tākoto, Te Rawara, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Hainemana, Ngāti Pākehā) with Frank Topia (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Haua) and kaiāwhina (helpers).

Nau mai haere mai, you are welcome to attend an introduction and beyond to raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax).

Classes held at the Leonard Cockayne Centre aim to spread knowledge of traditional Māori weaving and healing practices utilising the native plants at Ōtari Wilton’s Bush. We hope to bring our surrounding community together on a regular basis.

Starting with tikanga and making kono and konae (small containers), overtime, continued attendees develop their skills and craft new objects such as baskets and wahakura and finer kete.

In earlier sessions, harakeke and other tools will be provided until you have been taught tikanga for harvesting your own. You will walk away with woven taonga at the end of each class.

Rongoā (Māori healing) tea and other light refreshments will be provided based on the current Covid rules and restrictions.

Please BYO food, drink, blanket/towel and regulars bring available tools such as scissors, pegs, bobby pins, butter knife, sharp knife, tarpaulin, bucket for para (waste), haehae, hapene etc.

With thanks to Wellington City Council.
