Join Dunedin’s after-school science club held in New Zealand’s biggest science centre. Ignite your child’s curiosity and inspire a love of STEAM, Wednesdays during term 4.
Tūhura Club is delivered by professional educators and Museum staff. Based in Otago Museum’s Tūhura Science Centre, children will also explore the Tropical Forest, the Planetarium, and the Museum galleries.
We entertain and educate, providing an inspirational experience. Children will perform experiments, make wonderful things, and see the science and art behind all that surrounds us.
Join the Tūhura Club and explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through amazing experiments and inspirational activities every week during the school terms.
TERM 4: GUARDIANS OF THE EARTH How can we save our planet? Join us to discover how we can all live more sustainably.
SESSION 1: WE ARE WHAT WE EAT
Are your taste buds tempted by tasty treats or silver beets? Discover how to grow your own food for yourself and other wildlife.
SESSION 2: TOXIC WASTE
What is pollution? From light and sound to rubbish and gases, these examples of pollution are all around us. Let’s experiment and learn how reducing, reusing and recycling can help minimise our use of resources.
SESSION 3: ENERGY – THE GOOD, THE OLD AND THE UGLY
Energy is everywhere! Let’s experiment to discover the forms of energy that are good (renewable), old (fossil fuels) and ugly (energy released in decomposition), and learn how to use energy wisely.
SESSION 4: WILD WEATHER
The climate has been changing on Earth since the beginning of time. Let’s explore why this happens and find out more about the wild weather patterns associated with climate change.
SESSION 5: MASS EXTINCTIONS
The dinosaurs weren’t the first animals to get wiped from the face of Earth, and won’t be the last. Let’s explore Earth’s extinctions and the reasons they happened. Many scientists agree we are now in a mass extinction. Let’s discover why, and what we can do about it.
SESSION 6: PESKY PESTS
From rock-snot to possums, unwanted visitors and introduced pests can change the balance of an ecosystem. Let’s explore how museum collections help us understand the past and give us insights for the future.
SESSION 7: CHANGING HABITS
What is a carbon footprint? How do we know the impact of our activities? Discovering the interconnectedness of everything, and how we can all make a difference.
SESSION 8: SUMMER CELEBRATION
Celebrate the end of the year with an extravaganza of STEAM and use our knowledge of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics to paint a picture of our future for each of us and our community.
