Haydn Symphony No.100 ‘Military’

They called Haydn ‘the Father of the Symphony’, and he’d earned the moniker. In these pieces, his inexhaustible creativity is at full stretch. But why the nickname ‘Military’? Because this is the first symphony to include percussion, and Graham Abbott examines the relationship between this rather radical innovation and the wars then being fought in the wake of the French Revolution.
