A collection of memorabilia and artefacts dating from the whaling days but. Emphasis is on the early settlement of the predominantly European (British) community, collections of which are housed in the old stone building of the Bank of New Zealand (1872) now owned by the Waikouaiti community and run by aa annually elected committee.
The collection is rich in farming equipment from 1840, but has little pre-European settlement material reflecting the very small Mäori population in this area. Clothing from last century is also displayed.
The old Bank of New Zealand is classified category 2 by the Historic Places Trust and its restoration is at present being investigated.
