Whale Tales 2022

For 12 weeks, Whale Tales 2022, an incredible immersive public art trail, has adorned Tāmaki Makaurau’s public spaces! 80 Tails telling 80 tales inspired by a healthy ocean and designed by some of Aotearoa's most talented artists and tamariki. Trail goers have been enjoying fabulous family fun around the city exploring the art.

The auction features up to 80 extraordinary Tail sculptures created by the best and brightest artists of Aotearoa including visually stunning and important works from well-known artists such as Wētā Workshop, Otis Frizzell, Gregory O'Brien, Cora-Allan Wickliffe, Sofia Minson, Jeff Thomson, Wei Lun Ha, Anna Leyland, and many more.

Bid to purchase your favourite Tail at this evening event, to be held at the Maritime Room, Viaduct!

Tickets include;
- Guests will enjoy an electric atmosphere as they get ready to bid for the artwork they love.
- Refreshments
- Beverage on arrival
- Network with WWF-New Zealand, Whale Tales event partners and art enthusiasts
- A cash bar will be open, and it will be the last opportunity to purchase some of the Whale Tales merchandise.

The Tails have brought creativity, colour, and environmental awareness to the public spaces of Tāmaki Makaurau over the last few weeks, but now they are ready for their forever home.

Funds raised at the auction will go toward WWF-New Zealand’s vital work protecting New Zealand’s marine environment and its taonga species, including the Bryde’s.

Early bidding opens for Timed Auctions on 19 - 26 April before the big Auction Event on 2 May, available online and in person.

If you have any questions about the auction or the process, please let us know. Our team is ready to help.

WWF-New Zealand has partnered with Wild in Art, Auckland Unlimited, and Harcourts NZ to bring the trail to the City of Sails and raise awareness of the vital work WWF-New Zealand does to look after our ocean, including our beautiful Hauraki Gulf and its endangered resident, the Bryde's whale. There are only 135 Bryde's whales left in the Hauraki Gulf, and it is a "Nationally Critical" species. Together, we can help restore the Gulf and protect the future of this taonga species.
