Join us for a friendly chat with Shaneel Lal hosted by comedian Janaye Henry. This event spotlights the many ways in which Shaneel contributes to creating a safe and equitable world.

Shaneel Shavneel Lal (They/Them) is iTaukei and Indian and identifies as vakasalewalewa and hijra. Lal is the founder of the Conversion Therapy Action Group, an executive board member of Rainbow Youth and the Auckland Pride Festival and is a trustee of Adhikaar Aotearoa. Lal is also a model, a political commentator on queer and indigenous rights issues, a law and psychology student at the University of Auckland and a Young Justice Leader for New York University Center on International Cooperation.

Janaye Henry (Ngāti Kahi ki Whangaroa) began making waves in the Wellington comedy scene, winning Best Newcomer in 2017. She strongly believes laughter is a powerful tool and is passionate about making confusing topics easier to understand – in 2021 she completed a theatre tour across Aotearoa to teach teenagers about sex. In 2020 she started creating content on Instagram which has now gathered over 11,000 followers. After seeing her Instagram, The Spinoff invited her to write regular content. Since then, she has mentored other writers and regularly writes for Have You Been Paying Attention?. She is a nominee for the 2022 Billy T Award and working on various projects.
