There are two complementary strategies for improving wellbeing. One is to focus on repairing what is broken in life; the other is to bolster existing competencies and strengths. Traditional social and psychological models focus largely on the first strategy; wellbeing science builds on positive psychology to facilitate the second.
In recent years positive psychology has been increasingly utilised by education and helping professionals (and those in community development roles), to improve outcomes for the people they work with. However new developments in this field have seen positive psychology thinking evolve towards a more comprehensive “wellbeing science” model. Wellbeing science builds on positive psychology’s focus on individual potential, and seeks to discover and promote the systems, networks and organisational factors that can also facilitate thriving for individuals, families and communities.

Paul Tupou-Vea is an Auckland based wellbeing consultant and trainer. He is the current president of the New Zealand Association of Positive Psychology and holds a Masters in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Melbourne. He has worked with a range of education and social service agencies assisting them to implement wellbeing focused systems and work practices that allow their people (staff and clients/students) to flourish. Paul’s experience and contemporary knowledge, combined with his practical and engaging teaching style make this training a must for any professional looking to integrate a wellbeing focus into their practice framework.
