1850s Wetplate Portraiture arrives in Foxton!

Wetplate is a handmade photographic technique from the 1850s. Traditionally collodion is poured onto a glass plate, sensitized in silver solution then while wet taken to the camera to be exposed. (hence the name WETPLATE).

The exposure can take around 10-15 seconds in natural light and once exposed must be developed while still wet.

All up it can take 10 minutes to create, shoot and develop a photographic plate where the final image magically appears in front of your eyes! Nineteenth century instant film!

You will learn how to coat the photo plate, sensitize it in a silver bath load it into a photo plate holder, pose and light your subject and then expose the plate in the 19th-century style large format 4x5" camera. After exposing the plate you will learn how to develop and fix the plate and enjoy the magical moment the image appears.

All attendees may keep the plate they shoot. you will work in pairs and take turns in the darkroom and in shooting each other.

In total, we should take about 2 hours for 6-8 people each session.

We thank Creative New Zealand for the support.
