Located in the heart of the Wairarapa, just outside Masterton, Matahiwi Estate produces its wine according to the criteria of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.
Jane Cooper and Alastair Scott want to make wines to reflect a purity of fruit and a sense of place. To this end they have fostered intensive hands-on practices, in line with those used by premium international wine producers.
Meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard to determine optimum picking times results in wines with the Matahiwi hallmarks of balanced flavours, mouth-filling texture and a lingering finish.
Symbolising the rebirth of winemaking in Masterton for the first time since prohibition, Matahiwi's logo embraces the phoenix - a mythical sacred firebird, which ignites and reduces itself and its nest to ashes at the end of its 500- to 1000-year life cycle, only to emerge anew to live again.
