Join us for an un-Orthodox look at icon painting though the lens of local up-and-coming artist, Hilary Willett. Held on zoom, all are welcome to be a fly on the wall as she works on a current commission, discussing her own passions within the world of icon painting.

Hilary Willett (she/her) is a self-taught, Anglican iconographer based in Auckland, New Zealand with her partner Kit. She is training to be a priest in the Anglican church and holds a Master of Theology where she explored feminism, scripture and Christianity. A newcomer to world of iconography, Hilary began writing icons as a hobby in late 2019 but eventually began taking commissions and making prints. As someone with fresh eyes on Icons, she believes that this is what makes her art form exciting.

Hilary was drawn to iconography as an extension of her love of theology. The deeply symbolic nature of iconography became a new way to reflect on the nature of God; the slow meditative process of writing an icon became a new form of prayer. She is un-Orthodox in style, often enjoying to write religious icons with intersectionally feminist themes. She feels it is important to explore a range of women from within the Christian tradition, including those who are overlooked due to being seen as “impure” in some way. She believes that women are complex, and broadening or unsettling the female images we admire in a religious setting is necessary to embracing full female participation and leadership in modern-day communities.

A live Q&A will be held also during the zoom. We will have sign language interpretation courtesy of Platform Interpreting NZ
