Come along to the Takapuna Library these July school holidays as we celebrate the nine stars of Matariki and Taku taiao, Taku tuakiri - My environment, My identity.

Sunday 11 July 2021, 1.45pm – 3pm
1.45 – 2.30 Māori Art and Activity with Little Rose Home-based Childcare.
2.30 – 3pm Waiata Mai Tamariki Mā with Whaea Tina and Whaea Jo. Have a go at poi, rakau and haka while singing songs in te reo Māori and English.

Grab a cushion and settle in for a family movie.

Waitī's Water Filtration System
Waitī is connected to our freshwater streams and rivers. Learn to make a water filtration system using recycled bottles and dirty water. This could be a messy activity! Suitable for ages 6 and up.

Lego Club – Matariki challenges
Waipunārangi, Waitī and Waita are all connected with water. We challenge you to make water-inspired Lego builds!

Printing Press Workshop
Join Graham for a mini workshop using his vintage Albion printing press! There are nine spaces available for this workshop – please email for more information or to reserve a spot for your child. Interested but don’t want to participate? The workshop will be run in the library so come and watch the printing press in action.

Harakeke Whetū – Flax star
Our librarians have been learning to make ngā whetū (stars) using harakeke (flax). We will show you what we have learned then make your own to take home.

Hiwaiterangi is all about our goals, hopes and dreams. Create your own customised journal full of goal-setting and positive encouragement.

We’re using papercraft techniques to make flying comets and shooting stars.

Lego Club – Matariki challenges
Ururangi, Hiwaiterangi, Pōhutakawa are about the wind, our dreams, and remembering our loved ones. We challenge you to use these whetū in your Lego builds.

Pōhutukawa's Remembrance Candles
Remember loved ones by making a mini tealight candle. This gentle, thoughtful session focuses on the star Pōhutukawa who helps us remember those we have lost (yes, toys too). Suitable for children 8yrs and up although everyone is welcome.
