The friendship between Ralph Hotere (Te Aupōuri) and Bill Culbert is considered one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most productive artistic partnerships. Spanning more than two decades, their collaboration produced a series of awe-inspiring and provocative installations, which maintain a sense of their respective practices, as well as honouring the creativity of each artist individually.
As Bill Culbert | Slow Wonder opens in Tāmaki Makaurau, the first major survey exhibition of Hotere’s artistic career in twenty years, Ralph Hotere: Ātete, comes to a close in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Julia Waite and Nathan Pōhio, the curator and co-curator of the exhibitions respectively, join forces to discuss the relationship between the two artists and their shared interest in the metaphorical potential of light and darkness.
Nathan Pōhio is of Waitaha, Kāti Māmoe, Ngāi Tahu descent. Nathan has an MFA in film and is an artist working in video and other photo media. He is Assistant Curator at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. In both roles he operates from within a Ngāi Tahu position to bring tangata whenua/iwi perspectives to history to reflect on the experiences of a contemporary Māori society. Nathan is Chair of The Physics Room a contemporary art space for experimental art practice and a founding member of Paemanu, a collective of Ngāi Tahu contemporary artists. Nathan is the representative trustee for Ngāti Wheke on the Te Ūaka Lyttelton Museum board and represented Aotearoa New Zealand at documenta14 in Athens Greece and Kassel Germany 2017.
Julia Waite is Curator, New Zealand Art at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Her research interests include the development of modern art in New Zealand, and global modernisms. She has a Masters in Art History from the University of Auckland (First Class Honours) and a Masters of Museum and Heritage Studies from Victoria University. Julia has curated several exhibitions at Auckland Art Gallery, including Freedom and Structure: Cubism and New Zealand Art 1930-1960 (2015), and the co-curated Gordon Walters: New Vision (2017), and Louise Henderson: From Life (2019-20).
