Enjoy a guided tour around the unique Wairakei golf & sanctuary and the Crombie Lockwood kiwi burrow, with kiwis for kiwi, greening Taupo and the department of conservation.
This is a very special opportunity to learn about how local partners are working together as kaitiaki for some of our most precious flora and fauna.
A trip to showcase the relationships between the Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary, Save the Kiwi, The Department Of Conservation, Greening Taupo and the Taupō community. The tour will include a trip around the Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary showcasing it’s unique flora & fauna, learning the differences between a ‘regular’ golf course and the uniqueness of the Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary. You will also learn about the Sanctuary’s predator-proof fence and trapping programme, and participate in a once-in-a-lifetime tour of the Crombie Lockwood Kiwi Burrow.
Trip Length: Approx 2.5 Hours
Minimum Age: 10 Years (Kids must be accompanied by an adult)
Maximum Participants: 12
Meeting Place: Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary Pro Shop
Transport: Own to Golf Course then golf carts. 2 per cart only.
Cost: Koha (donation) to Project Tongariro + Kiwi’s for Kiwi
Will be cancelled if the forecast is for poor weather. A call will be made on the day and participants will be notified before 12pm. Other criteria for cancelling include Covid alert level increase.
Participants are asked to bring the following:
- Water & windproof & warm clothing - Golf Course Dress Code
- Sturdy tramping or walking shoes
- Sunglasses / sunscreen / sunhat
- Personal medication
- Camera (optional)
- Drivers licence to be supplied on the day if you wish to drive a golf cart.
Please note: Wairakei Golf + Sanctuary reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone who has not adhered to the Dress Code and the Trip Leader reserves the right to refuse anyone who is insufficiently equipped.
