Treasures of Tāne
Rob Tipa and partner Stella McDonald bring Rob’s book Treasures of Tāne to life with stories of traditional uses of native plants, and their efforts to re-establish these treasures on Otago Peninsula.
''Treasures of Tāne' is the culmination of 20 years work as a freelance journalist for Rob (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Kahungunu). To reconnect with his heritage, he researched a series of articles on traditional uses of native plants valued as taonga (treasured) plants by Ngāi Tahu.”

Rob and Stella are kaitiaki (guardians) of a rocky headland on Otago Peninsula, most of which has been progressively retired into native bush over the last 25 years.

They have re-established a pocket of native forest that includes kahikatea, tōtara, miro, matai, rata, pohutukawa, and beeches. Underneath this canopy is a rich biodiversity of native plants that once provided a diverse range of survival foods, medicinal plants and industrial resources for Waitaha, Ngāti Mamoe and Ngāi Tahu iwi before European settlers arrived.

Rob and Stella believe that our taonga native plants play a key role in stabilising the steep slopes and clay soils of Otago Peninsula and deserve a lot more respect for their diversity and extraordinary role in the survival of our ancestors, both Māori and Pākeha, on these southern shores.
