The Kiwi Jazz Legends:
Lead by Julie Mason
This group which encompasses some of NZ’s finest Jazz musicians was formed as a tribute to the late Phil Broadhurst (pianist/composer/educator/broadcaster), by his wife/widow Julie Mason. The band played at Phil’s funeral for 100 people on August 1st 2020, and then again at Phil’s Memorial Concert on 15th November 2020.
They are playing at the club prior to their concert at The Tauranga National Jazz Festival on 3rd April 2021. That concert, titled “To Phil With Love”, will also feature the Auckland Jazz Orchestra playing some amazing arrangements by Phil’s Massey Uni Alumni, of Phil’s own compositions.
The line-up is as follows:
Trumpet/flugelhorn - Kim Paterson
Tenor sax - Brian Smith
Piano & vocals - Julie Mason
Bass - Alberto Santarelli
Drums - Frank Gibson
All are truly Kiwi Jazz Legends, except for the pianist, who, at 60 years of age only, is working on it!
The programme will feature a mix of Phil’s favourite Jazz Standards and Songbook Standards, with special arrangements by Julie.
Something for everybody and another chance to remember the extremely talented Phil Broadhurst.
