With my basket and your basket the people will thrive.

Linda Lee (Ngāti Kurī, Ngāi Tākoto, Te Rawara, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Hainemana, Ngāti Pākehā) with kaiāwhina (helpers).

Nau mai haere mai, you are welcome to attend an introduction and beyond to raranga (weaving) with harakeke (flax). These classes held over previous months are being continued until the end of October.

Classes held at the Leonard Cockayne Centre aim to spread knowledge of traditional Māori weaving and healing practices utilising the native plants at Ōtari Wilton’s Bush. We hope to bring our surrounding community together and get to know one another on a regular basis. Starting with tikanaga and making putiputi (flowers), overtime, continued attendees will develop their skills and craft new objects.

Harakeke and other tools will be provided until you have been taught tikanga for harvesting your own.

You will walk away with small woven taonga at the end of each class. Rongoā (Māori healing) tea and other light refreshments will be provided at Level 1.

Note: Due to Level 2 restrictions - Saturday Days are a little different as the weather impacts class numbers. When it is warm and dry we will teach on the LCC lawn, when the weather is poor, the capacity will be reduced to 10.

We will run classes with 3 options to make the most of your time and the limited capacity.

1. One day wananga 10am - 5pm option (1-2pm BYO lunch or go out for lunch)
2. 10am - 1pm option
3. 2pm - 5pm option

If you have attended regularly in the past you can join in the one-day wananga option. Simply book tickets for both 10am and 2pm classes.

In addition, please BYO food and blanket due to Covid Alert Level 2 restrictions.
