Because of the uncertainties and restrictions resulting from COVID-19, it has become clear that the DSO is no longer able to present its 2020 International and Matinee Series concerts as advertised

Our Beethoven 250 celebrations culminate with his mighty Symphony No. 9, ‘Choral’. Regarded by some as one of the supreme achievements in the history of Western music, it is also one of the most performed symphonies in the world. Based on Schiller’s ‘Ode to Joy’, it finishes with a celebration of the unity and dignity of human kind, a theme still topical today.

The vocal soloists all have established careers and perform with major orchestras and opera companies: Anna Leese and Kate Spence are based in New Zealand, and Jonathan Lemalu in England.

Violin soloist Anna Im will be soloist in the Sibelius Violin Concerto, the concerto she played when she won the 2019 Michael Hill International Violin Competition.

Marshalling the forces will be Simon Over. The DSO’s Principal Guest Conductor is equally accomplished as a conductor of leading orchestras, singers and choirs, especially in England where he is based.

Simon Over – Principal Guest Conductor
Anna Im – Violin
Anna Leese – Soprano
Kate Spence – Alto
Jonathan Lemalu – Bass
