"...dazzling in his harmonic adventurousness, melodic resourcefulness, switchback rhythmic ideas and non-bombastic sense of drama." - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald
"One of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers." - Loudmouth Magazine
Based in Sydney for the past decade, Barry has kept his kiwi roots well-watered with regular touring pilgrimages home to NZ. Tonight he returns to the Jazz & Blues club with his Sydney trio, for an evening of both familiar and lesser-heard music from the Antipodean and American songbooks and pivotal artists such as George Gershwin and Thelonious Monk.
A sessional lecturer and coordinator of jazz piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he received his PhD in composition in 2018, Barry maintains a busy schedule composing, teaching and performing across Australia, New Zealand and more recently Japan. He oscillates between the jazz, improvised music, and contemporary classical spheres, having performed and recorded with koto player Michiyo Yagi in Japan and composed for acclaimed Sydney-based new music group Ensemble Offspring, alongside regular work as a sideman on both piano and Hammond organ.
Barry is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year, a BBM Scholarship 2nd place in the National Jazz Awards, and a finalist in the APRA Professional Development Awards. His 2018 quartet release Blueprints & Vignettes received 4-stars in the Sydney Morning Herald and was longlisted for the 14th Australian Music Prize.
Barry’s trio features the bassist Jacques Emery and drummer Alex Inman-Hislop, who represent the exceptional standard of creativity and accomplishment in the next generation of emerging artists on the Sydney scene.
