Visit the state-of-the-art nocturnal Kiwi House and see the resident kiwi foraging for food as they would in the wild. Learn about Kiwi conservation at a keeper talk and meet the other residents of the Kiwi House- gecko, weta, fish and our little star, Flash the Tuatara.

The Whangarei Museum is home to nationally significant taonga (Maori treasure), early settler displays and changing exhibitions. Local stories are told through a collection founded c1890, and now numbering in excess of 80,000 artefacts. The collection is accessible to the community and visitors through research enquiries, education and exhibition. Permanent displays and a programme of changing exhibitions are shown in both the large Museum main gallery and the more intimate Mim Ringer Gallery.

Heritage Park is home to several Heritage New Zealand listed buildings and around 10 different interesting clubs are tenants on the property. Sitting pride of place above Whangarei City is the Clarke Homestead “Glorat” built in 1886 and lived in by the Clarke family until the 1980s is a museum in itself, displaying the family’s treasures through the generations. Other heritage buildings on site include the first Women’s Jail, Jane Mander’s Study, Oruaiti Chapel (made from a single Kauri log and believed to be New Zealand’s smallest church) and Riponui Pah School House.

Set aside several hours, bring a picnic and take in the grounds of Heritage Park.

Home to regular event days some of the highlights are Medieval Madness, Storybook Easter Sunday, Matariki and Father's Day with Barnardos. On special events the Heritage Park Clubs open their doors to the public revealing displays of vintage farm machinery, stationary engines, and vintage cars. Novelty rides can include miniature and full-sized trains, miniature ponies and vintage tractors. Food stalls, face painting and an eclectic mix of family fun activities provide that festive flavour.
