Timaru's Heroes - Roadside Stories

Address:

Timaru

A Manatū Taonga audio guide to some of Timaru's memorable characters. Check out the Ministry for Culture and Heritage's audio guide in the image carousel above.

Statues in Timaru commemorate several New Zealand heroes with local connections. Bob Fitzsimmons was a world champion boxer; athletics star Jack Lovelock won Olympic gold and broke the world record for the 1500 metres. Racehorse Phar Lap had a glittering career, mostly in Australia, while inventor Richard Pearse developed an early aeroplane.

Roadside Stories are a series of audio guides to places of interest on major road trips in New Zealand. Each guide tells the story of an attraction along the way -- its people, its history, its cultural and natural significance.
