Purchased from the local Maori in 1831, by captain John Wright, Omata was a key destination point for European immigrants to New Zealand. This began Omata's involvement in Russell under European ownership.
In 1883, the Deeming Family purchased 70 acres from John Wright's estate. This land was passed down through generations until 1994 when the land was developed to make today's Omata Estate.
Omata Estate is now owned by the Cashmore Family and under the guidance of Ben Norman (viticulturalist) and Rod McIvor (wine maker) Omata has established itself as one of Northlands premier wine growing sites. The coastal climate similar to Waiheke, but further north and higher sunshine hours, is growing consistently stunning wines. Omata wines have won international acclaim and we are continually improving our soils and viticulture using natural and sustainable practices. Our goal is to pleasantly surprise your palate with every taste.
Omata has plantings of Syrah, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Merlot grapes. Each of the varieties have been planted in selected sites within vineyard to maximize the microclimates and the soils effect on the wines.
Omata's vines grow on clay slopes within a stone's throw of the ocean – the sea breeze maintaining a long and even season. All the wines are produced using traditional techniques. Omata's vines are carefully hand tended, with low cropping levels, to produce stunning wines from this unique site.
