One of Auckland’s preeminent winter celebrations, Matariki Festival, returns with a massive run of amazing events happening across the region from June through to July.
Matariki—also known as "the rising of the star constellation"—is a significant time in the Māori calendar, as it marks the start of the Māori New Year. Historically, new year celebrations provided the opportunity for communities to come together to acknowledge the year gone by and make plans for the year ahead. Festivities involve sharing of kai (food), rituals, knowledge, kōrero (discussions) and entertainment.
