NZTrio kicks off its 2018 series in Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland, offering audiences a thrilling cross-section of piano trio repertoire in June, September and November, including a new commission by NZ composer Celeste Oram.
Deep connections are woven through each concert and across the series. Familial, romantic, and collegial relationships are revealed among the Mendelssohns, the Schumanns, and Brahms. Stylistic nuances across the decades appear among Kiwi composers – Buchanan, Kelly, and Oram, and Aussies Greenbaum, Kats-Chernin, and Hindson – allowing for comparisons of styles from either side of the Tasman. The concerts open with a sense of strength and fragility in the Clement and Glass, referencing the 125th anniversary of New Zealand’s suffragettes in the central concert of all female composers.
Each concert presents a fresh dynamic, with an impressive line-up of talented Kiwi guest musicians – Natalie Lin, Benjamin Baker, and Amalia Hall (violin) and Stephen De Pledge and Somi Kim (piano) – arriving from all corners of the globe to join Ashley Brown (cello) in exhilarating NZTrio combinations every time.
