Course content and learning outcomes

This 2-day course will focus on the 3 Dimensional simulation software of the Shima Seiki Apex Design System. The programme enables the user to develop and visualise a custom sized mannequin to create garments that can be virtually fitted and assessed for pattern adjustments while making various colourways, designs and patterns on the garment in a ‘live’ view.

A broad range of products including footwear, interior design and furnishings, commercial spaces, apparel and visual art can be further realised and ‘mesh mapped’ onto existing photos or sketches, to create realistic concept development images with the easy to use tools of scale adjustments, seamless pattern repeat, colourways and fabric options.

This simulation software enables the user to:
- Create a custom made mannequin to specific body dimensions
- Design and visualise a garment in a ‘live 3D’ environment on the mannequin
- Use a fitting menu to easily asses the design of the garment in real time
- Create colour ways of garments on the mannequin for sales presentations
- Simulate a pattern or fabric design onto any image using the ‘Mesh Mapping’ tool
- Easily create colourways, adjust scale and create design boards with easy to use tools and techniques

Who should attend

This short course will appeal to those actively involved in design concept development, who wish to take their work into a 3D space. Only six places are available on this course due to the specialised Shima Seiki Apex design software used. A high level of tutor to student contact is a feature of this course.

Course presenter: Alysha Gover.

Alysha has a strong design background in the knitwear and textile sectors having studied for her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at AUT. Alysha worked closely with the TDL throughout her course of study, developing knit and digital print pieces for her own research, as well as samples for her free-lance clients. She has attended several Apex Design system training sessions at the Shima Seiki training centre in Japan. After completing her Master’s Degree in Art and Design (Fashion Major) she worked in the fashion and knitwear industry before moving into the work-wear sector where she currently works in a Product Development and Sourcing Specialist role.
