Egmont Community Arts Council is celebrating their 30th birthday with this event. Dame Malvina Major in concert with her students and guests - the Coastal Singers Choir and Troy Stevenson - pianist. A two hour programme with free refreshments at interval.
Dame Malvina Major ONZ, GNZM, DBE has combined an international opera career with a life of song and service, making her one of New Zealand’s most cherished musical figures.
She was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) in 1991 in recognition of her contributions to music, and a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (PCNZM) in 2008 for her contributions to opera.
Born in Hamilton, Dame Malvina was taught singing by Dame Sister Mary Leo at St Mary’s College Music School. After winning the 1963 New Zealand Mobil Song Quest and the Melbourne Sun Aria in 1964, Dame Malvina went to London to study at the London Opera Centre under the renowned teacher Ruth Packer. She won the Kathleen Ferrier competition while she was there.
Dame Malvina’s international opera career has included 28 major Operatic roles, extensive Oratorio and Concert repertoire and a wide-ranging discography of commercial recordings.
In 1992 she established a foundation to promote education through awards and provide training for young New Zealanders in the performing arts. One such recipient of her personal training is Hayley Westenra. Recent international concert performances have taken her to Asia, the Middle East, the United States, Australia and Britain. She is currently Professor of Music at University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
