Calendar Girls is a heart-warming, humorous and moving play that has toured the world, raising money for cancer charities since it was inspired by a true story in the 90s.
When the husband of a Yorkshire Women's Institute member fell ill with cancer, the group were determined to raise money for a new sofa in the hospital waiting room via a calendar... but not just any calendar. Unlike previous calendars featuring bridges and landscapes, this one would feature the women discreetly posing nude while busy with traditional W.I. activities, such as; baking, preserving and knitting.
They were normal women living normal lives in rural Yorkshire. They didn't spend months preparing to look perfect with a dedicated personal trainer. They had their photos taken just the way they were - and their imperfections were the beauty of it.
Gisborne Unity Theatre’s production of Calendar Girls, directed by Julie McPhail is supported by; a great cast, wonderful set, amazing props, costumes, lighting effects and a finale tune that will get your toes tapping - all these combine together to make a show you won’t want to miss.
