Wellington Night Market is bringing back the Lantern Festival on a bigger scale, with brand new electrifying additions to the festival for a spectacular weekend that is not to be missed. Stay tuned for all the exciting new aspects we are bringing to the Lantern Festival in 2019!
Accompany us on a journey through outstanding new lantern displays, immerse yourself in exciting games and competitions around the festival, watch in awe at the never before seen in Wellington cultural performances, explore the magical tunnel exhibition of local schools lanterns and tantalize your taste buds with delicious food from the very best food vendors in the North Island!
Expect to be dazzled by the many hundreds of handmade lanterns, as well as even more spectacular life-sized sculptured lanterns, including a 5m long dragon, 3m high peacock, 2m high panda, butterfly, and even a kiwi!
Each lantern is custom-built by Chinese artisans and typically takes a month to complete. This year, were adding six more life size lanterns to our displays (12 in 2019) including a pig to celebrate the 2019 Chinese Year of the Pig, one meter high teddy bears, and a six meter long fairy-tale themed horse and carriage.
Come and explore Wellington‟s favourite dining destination for food and culture hunters. It‟s where you go to experience the very best global street food and discover the hottest new food and flavours from anywhere and everywhere. Over 70 Wellington local food stalls will be serving up delicious treats all weekend.
Enjoy a rich multicultural experience by coming down to see stunning traditional and contemporary Asian culture performances from more than 150 artists. In 2019 we‟ll bring new innovative performances never seen before in Wellington, from Auckland and all the way from Taiwan.
Expect all your favourites and a few surprises too – Dragon Dances, Lion Dances, Hip-hop, Tap Dancing, Bollywood Dancing, Kapa Haka, Circus acts and much more – running across both days.
Each year WNM endeavours to generate an extensive amount of public participation throughout all ages.
We want to inspire the creativity of Wellington‟s youngest. In 2019 have 13 schools across the Wellington region participating in our lantern-making workshops and competition. Both a fun and educational experience, we have 105 workshops and 2500+ creative handmade lanterns to be created by local children. These will be in an exhibition located on Dixon Street.
Open to public vote, the winner of the most creative lantern will get return flights for 1 adult and 1 child to Asia, to experience Asian culture first-hand, sponsored by Singapore Airline. The winner will also receive $1000 in either art supplies or in cash to go towards the schools art fund.
