This talk provides a warts and all assessment of an important Otago and national figure, Robert Stout who grew up in the Shetlands, a place that shaped his personality and views. Arriving in Dunedin as a trained teacher and surveyor in 1863 he went on to become a prominent 'Progressive' politician, serving as Minister of Education 1877-79 and Premier 1884-87.
