Lizzie Bisley, Te Papa’s Modern Art Curator, will give a tour of the Gordon Walters retrospective New Vision. This remarkable exhibition, which draws together a comprehensive group of works from across Walters’ career, was developed by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
The talk will trace the full spectrum of Walters’ sophisticated and highly-influential abstraction, from early drawings of the mid-1940s and colourful gouache paintings of the 1950s, through to the visually complex koru series’ of the 1960s and 1970s, and the later geometric works.
The exhibition includes material from the private archives of the Walters Estate, much of which has never before been on public display. We’ll look at the paintings in relation this fascinating and rich archival material, which includes some of the artist’s preparatory sketches and notebooks.
We’ll move around the gallery, there’ll be time for questions throughout the session and we’ll enjoy refreshments after the talk, a time to socialise in a special setting.
Lizzie Bisley has recently joined Te Papa as Modern Art Curator. A graduate of the Art History programme at Victoria University, she completed an MA at London’s Royal College of Art before spending 8 years as a curator at the V&A.
