This course provides an introduction to Mandarin Chinese for those with no knowledge of the language. The basics of character writing and reading will be included and it is based around themes relevant for travel and work in China.

Chinese 1 is suitable for beginners who wish to gain an introduction to Chinese. While it is themed around topics relevant for travel and work in China it is also relevant for anyone wishing to acquire language skills for other personal or business reasons, or for personal study.

By the end of this course students will have learned:
How to meet and greet someone for the first time;
Introduce themselves using their name, nationality and age;
Converse at a party;
Ask the time;
Talk about family and friends;
Talk about the date and the weather;
Ask for directions.
