Introducing you to Auckland’s inaugural celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week.
There are two free events planned for our city: Auckland CBD on Thursday 13th and Manukau CBD on Friday 14th September, and we’d love to have your company.
For the last two years, Wellington has led the charge to bring attention to Māori Language Week. It is at this time every year, when hundreds of organisations nationwide invest thousands of man-hours and resources putting together quizzes and activities - dressing offices with Māoriesque paraphernalia and organising meals so people can experience the taste of Māori delicacies. All of it, to demonstrate their support for te reo Māori.
As New Zealand’s biggest city, Auckland is also home to the largest population of Māori in the world. These are reasons why it was decided that Tāmaki Makaurau should pool its resources and hold some celebrations of our own with live entertainment, food stalls, activations, information kiosks, reo Māori challenges, prizes, giveaways and much more.
This is our opportunity to highlight the Māori language as being essential to supporting the vision that “A thriving Māori identity is Auckland’s point of difference in the world – it advances prosperity for Māori and benefits all Aucklanders.”
It is the first time so many Auckland schools, businesses and community organisations have amalgamated and put resources together to create a series of events that validate the importance that te reo Māori has for us.
We are expecting up to 5,000 participants between the Auckland CBD, and Manukau central parades and we invite you to register your group today at the Te Taura Whiri registration website.
