Presented in association with Shining Peak Brewery, who will be providing refreshments on the night. There will be a special virtual guest appearance at the screening, exclusive to Govett-Brewster/Len Lye Centre audiences, so don't miss out.

A bona fide classic of midnight cinema, Tommy Wiseau's misguided masterpiece subverts the rules of filmmaking with a boundless enthusiasm that renders such mundanities as acting, screenwriting, and cinematography utterly irrelevant. You will never see a football the same way again.

"The Citizen Kane of bad movies" (Entertainment Weekly); "a bad – shockingly bad – romantic tragedy" (Time Out New York); "prompts most of its viewers to ask for their money back – before even 30 minutes have passed" (Variety). Most film-makers have nightmares about reviews like these, but they've worked wonders for The Room, a movie whose transcendent awfulness has made it a cult phenomenon and an audience-participation fixture along the lines of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

It's difficult to make any sort of movie, good or bad, but to make a movie that's so bad it's good you need vision, drive, luck and obsessive vanity. Fortuitously, The Room's writer/producer/director/star Tommy Wiseau appears to possess all of these qualities, combined with a total lack of acting talent.

2003 - US - 99 min - Dir. Tommy Wiseau

The Room Film Festival is screening over three consecutive Wednesdays in December at the Len Lye Cinema:

Best F(r)iends: Vol 1
Best F(r)iends: Vol 2

From the duo that brought you The Room is a tagline that knows its target audience. Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero play unlikely friends torn apart by greed, hatred, jealousy, and gold teeth with devastating and mysterious consequences.

Starring the creators of The Room, the cult film that inspired The Disaster Artist, Best Friends Volume 1 is a comedy-thriller featuring Wiseau as a mortician named Harvey and Sestero as Jon, a drifter – two unlikely friends/business associates whose partnership is tested by creeping paranoia and issues of loyalty and trust.
