In this is a 3-day course you will be taken through the full process of forging 100 layered Damascus steel billet and transforming it into cooking knife. Class are run over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Our classes can take up to eight students and are a great team building experience. Classes are suitable for participants of all skill levels. At the beginning of each class students receive an induction covering the use of the relevant tools and equipment along with standard workshop health and safety practices.
This class will cover:
You will begin by preparing the steel for their Damascus billets, measuring, cutting and sanding clean. It will be stacked and welded to a handle. You will forge weld the billet and draw it out under the power hammer, ready to cut and re-stack to increase the layers.
Once the desired amount of layers is reached you will be taken through the process of patterning your blade. Next you will forge out the shape of your blade ready for profiling the next day.
You will be using the angle grinder and belt sander to refine your knife profile, remove forge marks and clean back your blade. You will select a handle material from our stocks or bring your own timber/handle material. Pick a fitting material, usually brass or perspex, and cut a slot for the tang of the blade. The bladeThe knife will be hardened and tempered to give it the hardness, toughness and flexibility it needs to perform as a knife.
After heat treatment you will sand down your blade to a sharp edge and polish back the steel. The blade will be left overnight to etch in an acid solution.
You will measure the handle material to fit the tang, glue the handle and use the belt sander to shape it to the desired size. Using sandpaper, sand the timber to a smooth finish, making sure to round sharp angles. Lastly our blade and it will be sharpened ready for use.
