'Cosi has everything - drama, pathos, comedy, music and mayhem.'
This much-loved Australian play by Louis Nowra is an uplifting, riotous and moving comedy about madness, art, love & life!
It’s 1971 Australia and outside the world is caught in a time of social change; the streets buzzing with politics, social reform and anti-Vietnam war protest.
Meanwhile, inside a Melbourne psychiatric facility, a cast of patients join a ‘therapeutic project’ which soon spirals them into preparing a performance of Mozart’s famous comic opera, Cosi Fan Tutte. The only problem is that no one can act, sing or speak Italian!
Not only that, but the show’s director, Lewis, is straight out of university and very out of his depth and the theatre where they're rehearsing is seriously fire-damaged. What could possibly go wrong?
This hilarious and moving play is filled with delightful and outrageous characters each battling their demons to collaboratively produce something quite exceptional. It maps their journey from unpromising auditions to a triumphant live operatic finale from Cosi Fan Tutte. Throughout director Blaise Barham incorporates much of Mozart's music and live performance.
Equally important is the play's message about mental health and the transformative power of music and performance. In recognition of these difficult times and the play's important link with mental health, ticket prices have been reduced and performances will also be raising funds for the Mental Health Foundation.
Cosi reminds us that whatever problems we may have that with community, connection and love that we can achieve amazing things.
This is a must-see. It will definitely make you laugh, and a lot more!
