The Room is an erotic love-triangle-thriller revolving around Johnny, a strangely-accented gentleman in San Francisco, his “future wife” Lisa, whose behaviour inconsistently fluctuates between caring partner and manipulative monster, and Johnny’s best friend Mark, who is having an affair with Lisa.
After unsuccessfully submitting his film for Oscar consideration, The Room’s director Tommy Wiseau financed his own screenings of the film at two independent cinemas in LA during the spring of 2003, along with paying $5,000 a month for his own billboard promoting the film.
Word of mouth spread as a result, screenings suddenly becoming a runaway success.
Like an heir to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Room spent the following decade developing its own rabid fanbase, who recite the film’s numerous catchphrases (“Oh hi, Mark”; “In a few minutes, b*tch!”) during midnight screenings worldwide, and toss spoons at the screen whenever photographs of the dining implement appear in the background of a shot… which is bafflingly often.
Hollywood Avondale is home to The Room, we play Tommy’s own 35mm print, because we care deeply about our Roomies
