Gothic scripts are relatively easy to learn in their construction. Gothic Fraktur is a more flourished freer and easier to decipher script than Gothic Textura, where the letters are more angular and condensed. Fraktur was commonly used in old German documents.
Fraktur means “broken” so there are some nice variations to the letters which make them very attractive and fun to do. You will be able to use this script in many ways, including headings, names, and pieces of work. The script also lends itself to embellishments and decoration with colour and gold.
In this one-day workshop you will learn good construction of the Fraktur lower case and capital letters, words and numerals using a 3.8mm Parallel Pen, the ideal pen to use as the ink flows from the nib without having to worry about using dip pens and ink.
In your own time you can graduate to using other size Parallel Pens or dip pens. With the basic knowledge of this versatile script it is important to follow up with practise, to write with style and confidence.
Students will receive individual time throughout the course of the day and given ideas on how to use the Fraktur script. This workshop is best suited for students who have taken the Foundational workshop or who have some similar beginner experience.
Students will receive comprehensive handouts, guide sheets plus pen, ink, A3 layout pad, and supplies. Class fee is $120, payable on sign-up. ($100 if you provide all your own materials). Students should bring their own lunch. Coffee and tea will be provided.
