In this talk, Philip Temple will explore the process of writing a biography and the subject of his latest work, journalist and author Maurice Shadbolt.

Life as a Novel: a biography of Maurice Shadbolt (David Ling, 2018) is the first of a two-volume work and covers the years 1932 to 1973. In it Philip explores Shadbolt’s writing, his political activism, and his complicated personal life.

About the speaker
Philip Temple is an award-winning author of 10 novels and more than 30 non-fiction books for adults and children, including 'Beak of the Moon' and 'A Sort of Conscience'.
He was the recipient of the 2003 CNZ Berlin Writers’ Residency and has also been a Katherine Mansfield Fellow, a Robert Burns Fellow and in 1996 the National Library Fellow.
In 2005, he was invested as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for Services to Literature and given a Prime Minister's Award for Literary Achievement.
He is currently working on Volume Two of Shadbolt's life.
