Matt Pike and Mat Fieldes began jamming music together with lofty ambitions only 9-year-old best friends can possess. They met at primary school in Hastings, and bonded over a love of music (and cricket). Mat taught Matt all he needed to know to play guitar, and they jammed like there was no tomorrow … and here we are many tomorrows later, checking out the remarkable stages they have traversed.
After winning a TVNZ Young Achiever Award in 1994 Fieldes studied double bass at The Juilliard School, and forged a performance career based in New York City. From the orchestra pits of Broadway to the Symphonic halls of Europe, he has held the bass down with the best. Fieldes has collaborated with such luminaries as Joe Jackson, John Cale, Ornette Coleman, Jay Z , Gorillaz, Jim Steinman, Joe Zawinul, Paquito D'Rivera, Hugh Jackman, Pete Townshend, Billy Idol, Kristjan Jarvi, Joe Williams, Arturo Sandaval, and Barry Manilow.
Pike has eased from in-demand musical leading man to narration roles as time has allowed. Having gained critical acclaim and sought-after contracts in both Australasia and Europe (Jesus Christ Superstar, Cabaret, Cats, Miss Saigon, Evita, Blood Brothers, Starlight Express, and most recently Side by side by Sondheim at Circa earlier this year) Further to those triple threats, he performs with various rock acts, most notably Whole Lotta Led and Pink Floyd Experience.
Between them they have the broadest palate to illustrate the musical journey they have both been on. During this evening they revisit diverse musical highlights, and memorable moments from their wide and varied performance careers. This evening they will be sharing their exuberant blend of Jazz, Rock, Classical and Musical theatre ... well ... their Fortes!
