Academy Cinemas is proud to shine a spotlight onto German director Christian Petzold to celebrate our exclusive release of his latest film ‘Transit’.
Catch award-winning actress Nina Hoss in Petzold’s acclaimed ‘Barbara’ (2012) and ‘Phoenix’ (2014) on Saturday 15th June for only $10 each, before catching Petzold’s newest film that evening.
‘Barbara’, set during the 1980s in East Germany, follows the titular character (played by Nina Hoss) who plans to escape to the West, but constantly lives under the shadow of being found out. When she starts falling for her new boss, Andre (Ronald Zehrfeld), she wonders whether their relationship is real, or is he secretly spying on her?
Petzold reunited Hoss and Zehrfeld in ‘Phoenix’, set during the immediate post-war period in Germany. Hoss plays a holocaust survivor returning to Berlin after undergoing facial-reconstruction surgery, eager to find her husband and discover whether he betrayed her to the Nazis. The question is: will he still recognise her?
Finally, ‘Transit’ played as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival last year and follows Georg (Franz Rogowski), who assumes the identity of a recently deceased author in order to visit the port city of Marseille. While in transit, things get complicated when Georg stumbles upon the widow of the dead author, whose identity he stole, played here by Paula Beer.
