Canadian guitarist makes his CJC debut, with Auckland University colleagues, Kevin Field, Ollie Holland, Roger Manins & Ron Samsom.
Keith Price is a Canadian guitarist and composer who recently moved to New Zealand to serve as a Lecturer in jazz at Auckland University. Price learned his first chords from his grandfather on a dark-red hollow-bodied guitar and at age fifteen, was drawn into the world of jazz through the intensity and rawness of John Coltrane.
Later, Price studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the University of Manitoba before completing undergraduate and graduate degrees in jazz performance at Brandon University where he studied with internationally recognised pianist and composer Michael Cain.
Price’s omnivorous listening habits are the foundation of his expressive musical style which combines old jazz, new jazz, folk, noise and funk. His sound is a mixture of colours, textures, and flavours from different genres, filtered on stage through the process of improvisation. Whether performing with a double-quartet, a trio, or as a solo guitarist, Price’s musical approach focuses on openness, imagination, and the search for a shared connection with the audience.
For Price’s first CJC performance as a band-leader, he will be joined by his talented and creative colleagues Roger Manins, Kevin Field, Oli Holland, and Ron Samsom. The quintet will perform works from Price’s albums: Trio Antipodes: Upside Downwards (2019), Double Quartet (2017), Live at 101.5 UMFM (2015), Gaia/Goya (2011), and Breakfast of Champions (2009).
‘The notes and chords he uses weaves this dream-like atmosphere in his environment. He doesn’t seem to be afraid of silence with his instrument and he knows how to use space in his playing, the result being that the atmosphere stays even though he doesn’t play constantly. The rest of the band carries the atmosphere he’s created.’ –TicketMOMster
‘I feel that, at times, Keith flies under the radar here at home, which is a shame. In a blindfold test, his albums could hold up well with releases from anywhere in the world.’ – Keith Black
‘In 2017, guitar wizard Keith Price assembled an all-star crew of local jazz instrumentalists for his double quartet, and created a powerful record that will burrow into your brain more and more with every listen.’ – Sam Thompson of Witchpolice Radio
