Falling over isn’t part of the aging process. Many falls are preventable, and the Live Stronger for Longer national movement aims to help you stay on your feet and living the life you want to live. One of the best and easiest ways to avoid falling over is to build your muscle strength through exercise. People who have good lower leg and ‘core’ strength – that’s the thighs, mid-section and back – also have good balance.
Sport Wellington is working alongside exercise providers in the community who are running classes that target strength and balance - and therefore prevent falls; and we are looking to increase the amount of people participating in strength and balance exercise.
Classes who meet nationally approved, evidence-based criteria will be eligible to use the quality mark. Look for the ‘tick’ when selecting a class to know that it meets national agreed standards. For more information about local classes visit www.livestronger.org.nz.
