A concert on the theme “Heavenly Music”.
The program of much-loved chorales, anthems and motets will include many well-known works such as Joseph Haydn’s “The Heavens are Telling” from his oratorio “The Creation”, the ethereal “In Paradisum” from Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem” and Stainer’s dramatic “I Saw the Lord”, with the vocal lines and organ accompaniment combining to portray an electrifying aural vision of heaven.
The Director of Music at the Cathedral, Anthony Tattersall, says the choir are excited to present this glorious selection of music to showcase some of the repertoire performed within the annual cycle of services at the Cathedral.
The group comprises some 20 singers of all ages, from teenagers to more experienced cathedral choristers from all walks of life. They meet weekly to prepare the demanding repertoire expected in an Anglican cathedral.
Anthony says, “This concert is one of Waiapu Cathedral’s 2018 choral concert series that combine the lovely acoustic of the building, the magnificent organ and the musical talents of the choir, to perform some of the most glorious choral music written across the centuries from around the world.”
For this concert the choir will be joined by a string ensemble as guest artists. The group, which recently performed with the Cathedral Choir at the Easter Day Festival Eucharist, has been named “The Cathedral Strings” and is comprised of experienced Hawke’s Bay musicians who play regularly with other groups.
