What Is Poartry ?
PoARTry is a unique expression of art in a place where poetry and visual art meet. It first emerged at the November 2018 Poets Circle when, on that occasion, people were encouraged to contemplate the individual artworks on display whilst (in 15 words or less) applying their poetical skills to a particular piece. Primary School Teacher, Kaveeta was judged the winner.

Now those wishing to test their skills in this month’s contest, are urged to visit the current solo exhibition by Thames Artist Marianne Braithwaite, well in advance of this month’s Poets Circle. Then at the event, the entrants must recite their 15 Word Poartry poem, in order to be judged. The winner’s prize, a $10 Carsons Cafe voucher, will be awarded on the spot, and the winning poem will later be displayed on the Poets Circle PoeTree art installation in the Gallery.

Marianne Braithwaite is showing 14 new works in the Gallery from December 1st 2018 to February 2nd 2019. The paintings are broadly representative of her artistic versatility. Ms Braithwaite says, “Although watercolour won my heart a long time ago, I enjoy the freedom of working with mixed media and textured acrylic. Watercolour is not so forgiving. Sometimes one shot is all you get.”

Sure-handed watercolour “one shots” abound in this exhibition, some featuring local landmarks like Brunton House, Wharf Cafe, and Islands of the Coromandel. An imposing landscape titled “Drift” is a colourful testament to Marianne’s skill in the medium. All the paintings are for sale, with price tags ranging from $400 to $1,200.

At the December 20th Poets Circle, in a 5 minute interview with former radio host, Rex Simpson, the artist will share further insights of her approach to life and art. This will be followed by a 2 minute PoARTry performance.

The PoARTry artistic fusion events and contests in Carsons Fine Art Gallery Cafe are set to continue at Poets Circle on third Thursdays (7 pm - 9 pm) every month. The art exhibition cycles usually begin every six weeks, so contest entrants are advised to check out the new artworks then - well in advance of each Third Thursday Poets Circle.
