Wellington hosts The Jim Henson Retrospectacle to celebrate the magic and wonder of Jim Henson’s legacy with a world-first showcase of events. The Jim Henson Retrospectacle sees Henson’s creative worlds come together again for the first time; live in concert, on the giant screen, and behind the seams.
Rare footage from deep within the Henson archives, experimental short films and commercials, classic feature films and a New Zealand premiere will to be announced shortly, will screen over a fortnight at the Embassy Theatre. International guests will introduce a number of the screenings.
Classic Henson films screen alongside rare material from the Henson archives and TV specials; plus excerpts from early television appearances, video’s of Jim’s experimental puppetry and animation work, rare commercials, and behind the scenes footage.
Classic Muppets movies including The Muppet Movie (1979), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), Labyrinth (1986), and The Dark Crystal (1982) are highlights of this Muppets, Music & Magic Film Fortnight.
Recent Muppet features The Muppets (2011) and Muppets Most Wanted (2014), showcasing the musical talent of our own Bret McKenzie, will screen.
Muppet Historian Craig Shemin and our international guests attend screenings to present Jim’s creative work to New Zealand audiences with live commentary.
