Ikaros is a new, innovative work of site-specific theatre and dance, created for the 2018 Lōemis winter solstice festival. Starring Nick Blake (Daedelus); Luka Hanna (Ikaros); Justin Firefly (bouzouki); Tristan Carter (violin); Loren Taylor (Advisor); Produced by Andrew Laking; Directed by Miranda Manasiadis.
The Story: Daedalus, the great architect of the ancient world, stumbles, falls, gropes his way - leading us forward through the dark ngahere of Matairangi. He seeks his son, Íkaros. Íkaros, who would not listen. Who straddled hubris and complacency, and chose hubris. Who flew too high to the sun.
Daedalus is tormented by the incessant memory, of the terrible grief of losing his boy. Tormented by the lessons we cannot learn. Destined to see his son fall and fall again.
Daedalus leads us in the dark, in the night, through the forest. The musicians, accompany him, guide him, buoy him. The audience, like an ancient chorus, bear witness, become a part of the story.
